Legal Information
Last updated: 2 November 2026
This is the legal information and company disclosure page for DetecFy.org. It identifies the business that publishes and operates this website, records the statutory information we are obliged to disclose under South African law, and explains the rules that apply when you read, share, comment on or subscribe to our journalism. It is written in plain language so that it can be understood without legal training, and it applies to every page, article, newsletter, video, podcast and social feed published under the DetecFy.org name.
Please read it together with the other policy documents referred to in section 10. If anything here is unclear, you are welcome to write to us at help@detecfy.org and we will explain it.
1. Identity of the website operator
1.1 The publisher
DetecFy.org is an online entertainment magazine covering celebrity culture, television, film, music, streaming, red-carpet events and the people who shape South African popular culture. The magazine, its newsletters and its social channels are published and operated by a private company registered and incorporated in the Republic of South Africa in terms of the Companies Act 71 of 2008.
In this notice the words "we", "us", "our" and "the publisher" refer to that company. The name "DetecFy.org" refers to this website and to every edition, feed and communication that we publish under that name. Where we refer to "you", we mean any person who visits, reads, browses, subscribes to, comments on or otherwise uses the website.
1.2 Our role in relation to you
We act as the publisher of editorial content and, for the purposes of the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA), as the responsible party who determines why and how personal information is processed on this website. We are not an agent, marketplace or intermediary acting on behalf of any celebrity, publicist, broadcaster, studio or brand mentioned in our coverage, and nothing on this website should be read as an endorsement by those parties of DetecFy.org or of anything we publish.
We are the operator of the website in the sense used in section 43 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002 (ECT Act), and the disclosures in section 2 and section 3 of this page are made in order to comply with that section.
2. Legal form, registration details, tax identifiers and responsible persons
2.1 Legal form and company registration
The publisher is a private company with limited liability, incorporated in South Africa and registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC). Its registration number is 1950/038385/06. In line with section 32 of the Companies Act 71 of 2008, the registered name and registration number of the company are displayed on this page and in the footer of every page of the website, so that any person dealing with us can identify the exact legal entity they are dealing with.
The company is a separate legal person. Its directors and employees act on its behalf, and no director, employee, editor, freelancer or contributor carries personal liability for the obligations of the company merely because they are named on this website.
2.2 Tax identifiers
The publisher is registered as a vendor for value-added tax in South Africa. Where a supply made through this website is taxable, VAT is charged at the standard rate of 15% and is included in the price shown to you at the point of payment. The company's VAT registration number is printed on the tax invoice issued for every paid order and subscription, and a copy can be requested at any time by writing to help@detecfy.org. We do not display the VAT number in the body of this page because it is a commercial identifier that must appear on the tax invoice itself; the number on your invoice is the authoritative reference for any tax purpose.
No other tax, fiscal or licensing number is required to be displayed on a South African website of this kind. Our income tax reference number is held by the South African Revenue Service and is not published.
2.3 Regulators, licences and self-regulatory membership
Our editorial staff subscribe to the Press Code of the Press Council of South Africa, and the publisher is subject to the complaints and adjudication procedures of the Press Council. Readers who believe that a story is inaccurate, unfair or invasive of privacy may complain to the Press Council after first raising the matter with us. We are not a broadcaster and do not hold an broadcasting licence, and we are not a financial services provider, so no licence issued by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority applies to this website.
Apart from the Press Council, we do not belong to any other self-regulatory body and we do not subscribe to any other external code of conduct in respect of the content published here. Nothing in this paragraph limits your rights under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 or any other law.
2.4 Responsible persons
Three roles carry responsibility for this website. The Information Officer, appointed under section 55 of POPIA and registered with the Information Regulator, is responsible for compliance with data protection law and for the manual published under section 51 of the Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000 (PAIA). The editor is responsible for the editorial content published on the site and for the application of the Press Code. The board of directors is responsible for the overall governance of the company.
The names of the current directors are recorded in the public register maintained by CIPC and in the company's annual financial statements, and the identity and contact details of the Information Officer are recorded in our PAIA manual. Any of these details may be requested from help@detecfy.org and will be supplied within a reasonable time.
3. Registered office and how to reach us
3.1 Registered office
The registered office of the publisher, at which legal documents may be served and at which the company's records are kept, is 128 Leslie Avenue, Fourways, Sandton, 2191, South Africa. This is the address to use for formal notices, legal process and any written correspondence that must reach the company rather than an individual journalist.
3.2 Electronic contact
All enquiries, requests, complaints, corrections, takedown notices, data subject requests and legal notices may be sent to help@detecfy.org. This address is monitored on business days and is the single channel we use for correspondence about this website. Correspondence sent to an individual journalist's address, or through a social media message, is not treated as a formal notice to the company until it is confirmed at help@detecfy.org.
To help us respond quickly, please state clearly what your message is about, include the page address or article headline you are referring to, and tell us the outcome you are seeking. We aim to acknowledge substantive complaints within five business days and to give a full response within a reasonable period thereafter.
4. Purpose, scope and intended audience of the website
DetecFy.org exists to report on and comment on celebrity culture and the entertainment industry in South Africa and beyond: who is working on what, how the industry is changing, which stories are worth your attention and why. Our purpose is journalistic and informational. We do not sell celebrity merchandise, we do not act as a booking or publicity agent, and we do not publish content on behalf of the people we write about.
The website is aimed at a general South African audience and at readers elsewhere with an interest in South African popular culture. It is written for adults. Some coverage deals with mature themes, including relationships, legal disputes, addiction and grief, and is not intended for children. We do not knowingly direct marketing at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from a child without the consent of a competent person, as required by section 35 of POPIA.
Everything published here is journalism, comment, criticism or entertainment reporting. It is not professional advice of any kind, including legal, medical, financial or career advice, and it should not be relied on as a substitute for advice from a qualified professional who knows your circumstances.
5. Access to the website and acceptable use
Access to the public pages of DetecFy.org is free of charge and does not require registration. We may in future introduce optional accounts, newsletters or paid products, and where we do, the terms for those products will be published before you are asked to pay for anything. Because the site is free, we cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability, and we may suspend, restrict or withdraw any part of it, including comments, at any time.
You may read, print and share our pages for your own personal, non-commercial use. When you use the website you agree not to do any of the following:
- copy, scrape, crawl, mirror or systematically extract content, images or data from the site for a commercial purpose, or use automated tools in a way that places an unreasonable load on our systems;
- reproduce, republish or redistribute substantial parts of our content without written permission;
- post comments that are defamatory, threatening, harassing, hateful, sexually explicit, discriminatory or unlawful, including speech prohibited by the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act 4 of 2000;
- impersonate another person, a journalist, a celebrity or a member of our staff, or misrepresent your affiliation with any person;
- post another person's private information, including a home address, identity number, bank details or private photographs, without that person's consent;
- introduce malware, attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the site or its servers, probe our security, or interfere with any security or authentication feature;
- use the website to advertise, to run competitions, to solicit money or to distribute chain messages and spam;
- use our contact form or email address to send bulk or automated messages, or to send content that is unlawful or abusive.
If you breach these rules we may remove your contribution, close your account, block your access and, where the conduct appears to be criminal, report it to the South African Police Service. Conduct that interferes with data or with a computer system may constitute an offence under the Cybercrimes Act 19 of 2020. We keep a record of moderation decisions and will explain a removal if you ask us to at help@detecfy.org.
6. Ownership of content, trademarks and other intellectual property
6.1 What we own
All original material on this website, including articles, headlines, features, interviews, photographs, illustrations, graphics, videos, audio, page layouts and the DetecFy.org name and logo, is owned by the publisher or is licensed to it, and is protected by the Copyright Act 98 of 1978, by trade mark law and by other applicable intellectual property laws. The DetecFy.org name and logo are our trade marks and may not be used in a way that suggests sponsorship, affiliation or endorsement without our written permission.
6.2 What you may do
You may quote a short extract of an article, with a clear credit to DetecFy.org and a mention of the article's headline, provided the quotation is fair and is not presented as a substitute for the article itself. You may share links to our pages on social media using the sharing tools built into the site. You may not frame our pages inside another website, republish whole articles, or use our photographs in a way that removes or alters a watermark or credit line.
6.3 Third-party material
Some photographs, video clips and quotations are supplied by agencies, publicists, broadcasters or photographers and are used under licence or under a legal exception such as fair dealing for reporting purposes. Those items remain the property of their owners and are not covered by any permission we give you. If you believe that material on this site infringes your copyright or another right, write to help@detecfy.org with details of the work, the page concerned and proof of your rights, and we will investigate and, where appropriate, remove or credit the material.
6.4 Your contributions
When you post a comment or send us a letter, photograph or tip, you keep ownership of what you created. You give us a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to publish, edit, archive and share that contribution in connection with the website and our other channels, and you confirm that you have the right to grant that licence and that the contribution does not infringe anyone else's rights.
7. Accuracy, availability and proportionate limits of liability
We take reasonable care to report accurately, to distinguish fact from comment, and to correct errors promptly when they are pointed out. Celebrity reporting is fast-moving and relies on sources who may be mistaken, on public statements that later change and on court papers that are later amended. We therefore do not warrant that every detail on the site is complete, current or error-free, and readers should check anything important against a primary source before acting on it.
We aim to keep the website available at all times, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation. Maintenance, updates, network faults, hosting failures and events outside our reasonable control may interrupt access. We may change, suspend or discontinue any section of the site, and we may remove archived material where there is a legal or editorial reason to do so.
To the fullest extent permitted by South African law, the publisher is not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential loss, or for loss of profit, reputation or opportunity, arising from your use of the website or from reliance on anything published on it. Where our liability cannot lawfully be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid us, if any, in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim.
Nothing on this page excludes or restricts liability for fraud, for intentional wrongdoing, for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for any liability that may not be limited under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008. Your statutory rights as a consumer are unaffected by anything written here.
8. External links and third-party content
Our articles link to and embed material from other websites, social platforms, video services and news agencies, and we display advertising and sponsored content from third parties. Those services are operated by other companies under their own terms and privacy policies. We do not control them, we do not endorse everything they publish, and we are not responsible for their content, availability, accuracy or the way they handle your information.
Sponsored articles and paid partnerships are labelled as such. Advertising is kept separate from editorial decisions, and no advertiser is given the right to approve or change the substance of our reporting. When you click an external link or interact with an embedded player, you leave our control and should read the terms of that third party before providing any information to it.
9. Records, access to information and the PAIA manual
The Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000 gives effect to the constitutional right of access to information held by private bodies where that information is required for the exercise or protection of a right. The publisher has prepared and published a PAIA and POPIA manual, compiled in terms of section 51 of PAIA, which describes the records we hold, the categories of records that are available without a formal request, the procedure for making a request, the applicable fees and the grounds on which a request may be refused.
A request for access to a record should be submitted to the Information Officer at help@detecfy.org, using the prescribed form, with enough detail for us to identify the record. We will respond within the period allowed by PAIA. If you are dissatisfied with our decision you may apply to a court or, where applicable, complain to the Information Regulator.
10. Other policies that apply to you
This page is one part of a set of documents that together govern your use of DetecFy.org. The other documents are published on this website and should be read before you use the site or buy anything from it:
- Privacy Policy – explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how long we keep it, who we share it with and what rights you have under POPIA, including your right to access, correct and delete your information and to object to processing.
- Cookie Policy – explains the cookies and similar technologies used on the site, the difference between strictly necessary and optional cookies, and how you can manage or withdraw consent through the cookie banner and your browser settings.
- Terms and Conditions – sets out the contract between you and the publisher for use of the website and for any subscription, newsletter or paid product, including payment, delivery and account rules.
- Payment and Refund Policy – explains how payments are processed by our payment provider, when a subscription renews, how to cancel, and when a refund is due, including your right to cancel a distance sale within the cooling-off period allowed by the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008.
- PAIA and POPIA Manual – the record and request manual described in section 9 above.
Where a specific policy deals with a topic in more detail than this page, that policy prevails to the extent of the difference. Where a policy conflicts with a right you have under law, the law prevails and the policy will be read down accordingly.
11. Applicable law, courts and your consumer rights
This website and everything published on it are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa. Your use of the site is subject to that law, including the ECT Act, the Consumer Protection Act, the Copyright Act, POPIA and the common law.
Subject to what is said below about consumer disputes, you and the publisher consent to the jurisdiction of the High Court of South Africa, Western Cape Division, Cape Town, for any dispute arising from these terms or from your use of the website. A Magistrate's Court that has jurisdiction over you may also hear the dispute, even where the amount claimed exceeds its ordinary jurisdiction, as the Consumer Protection Act and the Magistrates' Courts Act permit.
If you are a consumer, you may refer an unresolved complaint about goods or services to the National Consumer Commission, or to the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud for the relevant sector, and you may approach a consumer court. Complaints about the accuracy or fairness of editorial content should first be raised with us at help@detecfy.org; if that does not resolve the matter, you may complain to the Press Council of South Africa under the Press Code. Nothing in this section prevents you from approaching a court directly where the law allows it.
12. Contact, changes to this notice and last-updated date
Questions about this page, notices of infringement, corrections, requests for company details and any other legal correspondence may be sent to help@detecfy.org. Formal notices to the company may also be delivered to its registered office at 128 Leslie Avenue, Fourways, Sandton, 2191, South Africa.
We review this page at least once a year and whenever the law, our corporate details or our services change. When we make a material change we will update the date at the top of the page and, where the change is significant, draw attention to it on the homepage for a reasonable period. The version published here is the version in force, and it replaces any earlier version. Continued use of the website after a change takes effect means that you accept the updated notice.
